You’ve just purchased a new dream home and that’s pretty exciting. And why wouldn’t it be? I mean, with all of the possibilities, new experiences and memories to make, there’s nothing quite like it . However, opening your bank account after moving in can be far less in exciting. In fact it can be downright frightening (were those moths that flew out of your wallet???).
The small costs of moving add up and can leave your budget pretty tight. All too often you don’t have a lot to spend on new decor to go along with your new home. Thankfully we have some great ideas for how to decorate your home on a tight budget.
Shop Thrifty - Visit thrift shops, consignment stores, and yard sales to find new-to-you items. You never know what gems you can find hidden in the rough at these places. Plus, it’s a fun way to spend the weekend.
Refinish your furniture - Give your furniture a new look by stripping old paint and refinishing it. Pick a central theme and color set, then make everything old look new again!
Repurpose - Things don’t always have to be what they seem. Group similar looking, but different sized dishes on the wall instead of spending tons on art. Have an old chair that it’s quite fit for sitting? Turn it into a nightstand by putting it next to the bed with a nice tray on it.
Create your own art - Create groupings of family pictures and frame them yourself. You can also find amazing printables online. All you need is photo paper and a printer, then get a frame ($10.99 on Amazon) for some nice looking, but totally affordable wall art.
Go natural - Sometimes you don’t even need to shop for excellent decor. You can find it in nature. Use shells, stones, wood and even sticks to make unique and natural decorations. For example, attach a stones to the end of a few wooden drawer knobs using Gorilla glue. Then screw it into a plank of wood for an earthy coat rack. Or buy a few inexpensive succulents and cacti for a relaxing grouping on a counter or bookshelf.
Fake a headboard - Don’t have a headboard? Don’t worry! You can easily fake one with paint. Check out this easy tutorial from Real Simple and learn how to fake it ‘til you make it.
Take your time - One of the best ways to save money while decorating is to take your time and plan it out. Everything doesn’t have to be decorated as soon as you first move in. Shop around for deals or take on a project piece by piece.
Buying and decorating a new home is supposed to be more fun than stress, even though it doesn’t always seem that way. What are some of your favorite DIY or decor on a dime ideas? We’d love to hear about how you decorated your new home in the comments or on our Facebook page!

"My wife and I had the chance to work with one of the best in the business, during an extremely active housing market in North Dallas. If you are looking for one of the best agents in the business, and an even better person away from Real Estate - JP Piccinini is your go to guy. Coming from the business he made the process very easy and always was available at any time to answer any questions that you might have. We made the decision to buy a home and plan a wedding at the same time. One of these is enough to handle/plan, but working with JP we knew the housing side was taken care of. If are looking for a seamless buying/selling process you have found your agent. I would highly recommend JP, do yourself a favor and give him a call today if you are looking to buy or sell real estate. Thanks again for all your hard work - Can't wait to do it again!!!!!!!"
